Ep 5 - When You’re Called a B****
When you’re called a b**** in front of the whole learning community:
Get Quiet, Get Clear
Don’t get loud, they will get louder. Get quiet, stay clear. Short, directive but respectful phrases. Maintain this throughout the interaction.
Exit Well
Rather than ignoring the behavior or exploding, initiate a reset.
“I do not appreciate that response. I need you to step out so we can both reset. I’ll come check on you in three minutes.”
If they don’t step out or they say no, stay quiet, stay clear. “I need you to step into the hallway. You’re not going to the office, please wait for me in the hallway.”
Remember Community
It might seem easier to jump back into teaching. But, when there is an audience for interactions like this, it is important to recognize the impact of behaviors on the learning community.
“That was a lot. I need a minute. Let’s take 60 seconds to reset. Let’s start by taking a few breaths together.”
You’ll earn way more respect for being human than trying to pretend that nothing happened.
Welcome Back
If it’s five minutes later or five days later, we always welcome back with respect and dignity.
“I’m glad you’re here. We’re going to have a good day today.”
Not, “I HOPE we have a good day,” or “Don’t do what you do yesterday.” Speak with the belief that good will prevail.
WRITE IT DOWN. Keep this four-step plan close by:
Get Quiet, Get Clear
Exit Well
Remember Community
